Cryomotive Tank Front Perspective

German hydrogen mobility start-up Cryomotive, has teamed up with commercial vehicle manufacturer MAN Truck & Bus, and truck and bus retrofitter Clean Logistics, to develop high-capacity cryogenic hydrogen gas storage systems with fast refuelling technology for long-haul hydrogen trucks. The goal is to achieve a range of 1,000 km per tank fill, and a
refuelling time of about 10 minutes.

The CryoTRUCK consortium has received a letter of intent from the German Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) to fund the consortium from January 1, 2022.

The three-and-a-half-year project, with a total budget of more than €25 million, will focus on developing a first generation of a storage and refuelling system for cryogenic compressed hydrogen gas (CRYOGAS).

The aim of the project is to demonstrate the suitability of CRYOGAS technology for use in long-haul commercial vehicles.

High-density cryogenic compressed CRYOGAS can be produced from either liquid or gaseous hydrogen.

Dr. Volker Wissing, Germany’s Federal Minister for Digital and Transport, says: “With alternative drives and fuels, we want to achieve zero-emission logistics on the road. Around 90 percent of the CO2 emissions in the transport sector refer to road traffic, with trucks accounting for a third. The development and testing of hydrogen gas tanks and refueling systems for fuel cell trucks in long-haul transport are a valid and important step for more climate protection in transport. I am very excited to see the results of the consortium in terms of refueling time and range.”

Established in October 2020, Cryomotive is a leading German hydrogen mobility start-up focusing on developing high-density hydrogen onboard storage and refuelling technology to enter the market with first small series applications starting in 2025.
