San Jose-based company Drako has revealed its second-ever car, the Dragon SUV.

The company, which previously produced the Fisker-based GTE saloon, says that its new car “takes electric hypercars to the next level” and will “redefine the way the world thinks about automotive performance, style, and luxury.”

The performance claims Drako is making are certainly impressive. It reckons the Dragon’s top speed should be more than 200 mph, while it will also be able to hit 60 mph in just 1.9 seconds — that’s about half a second faster than a Formula 1 car.

The speed comes from the Dragon’s DriveOS Quad Motor Powertrain, which provides around 2,000 horsepower and can split the power between all four wheels. An in-house battery system and the “nanosecond-precise” control of the DriveOS vehicle architecture also help with performance.

Meanwhile, a “three-stage suspension” will allow the Dragon to “conquer both roads and trails” and make it feel “less like a car and more like a spaceship.”

Drako isn’t finished there, however. The Dragon brings the “best of European design and American engineering” together to “create a futuristic experience replete with Old World [sic] comfort.”

The car’s almost entirely carbon fibre body was designed by Lowie Vermeersch, the company’s Chief Designer, and his Italian GranStudio team. The cabin comes “wrapped in Europe’s finest, most sumptuous leather.” The gullwing doors, meanwhile, should make getting in and out of the Dragon easier — provided no one has parked next to you.

But wait, there’s more. Drako says that while “you might expect an electric hypercar that so thoroughly outclasses the best offerings in the world to outstrip them in price,” it promises that the Dragon will be “priced competitively” with the existing super-SUV segment. Think cars such as the Lamborghini Urus, Rolls-Royce Cullinan, and the Bentley Bentayga.

The company also says that it has learnt production and development lessons from its previous GTE car — of which only 25 were ever produced.

There’s certainly a lot of bluster with Drako — perhaps a result of the founders’ Silicon Valley background. You can reserve your Dragon now, but we would probably wait to see it turn a wheel first before reaching for your credit card.
