Continental has acquired a stake in the German-U.S. software specialist Apex.AI. Continental and Apex.AI have already been cooperating since 2020 on the industrialisation of an operating system for vehicles.
With the minority stake now completed, the two companies are intensifying their collaboration in order to rapidly provide a near-series solution.
The deal is part of Apex.AI’s latest round of funding, which raised $56.5M. Other investors include ZF, Jaguar Land Rover’s InMotion Ventures, Airbus Ventures, Toyota Ventures, Hella Ventures, and Volvo Group Venture Capital.
Apex.AI is a Palo Alto, Munich, and Berlin-based company that is developing safe, certified, developer-friendly, and scalable software for mobility systems.
It has developed the meta-operating system Apex.OS, which s the first system of its kind for automotive applications that seamlessly supports all phases of software development.
Frank Petznick, head of the Advanced Driver Assistance Systems business unit at Continental, says: “With Apex.AI, we have a strong cooperation partner at our side to meet the major challenges of autonomous driving with innovative software solutions. The complexity of vehicle software and electronics architectures is increasing rapidly, and the number of digital functionalities is rising. The automobile is indeed becoming more and more like a smartphone on wheels, where the development of hardware and software is increasingly independent of each other and significantly accelerated.”

Continental generated sales of €37.7 billion in 2020, and currently employs more than 192,000 people in 58 countries and markets.
