Kia Motors has revealed its new Futuron Concept, an all-wheel drive SUV coupe which offers Level 4 autonomy.
The Futuron’s fully-electric powertrain features a high-capacity battery mounted low in the vehicle’s body, beneath the cabin floor. This provides electrical energy to four in-wheel electric motors.
The concept car is making its public debut at the 2019 China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai.
In a press statement, Kia says ‘The Kia Futuron Concept is built around a single, strong ‘360-degree’ design notable for its pure, smooth form devoid of ornament. The delicate diffusion of the body’s surfaces creates a series of taut, flowing shapes which twist, expand and contract around the body. The result is a sleek and streamlined shape, creating an aero-efficient profile’.
Kia says the two front seats can offer an upright ‘driving’ position, or a reclined ‘rest’ position, similar to the flexibility afforded to first-class airline passengers.
When the Futuron’s autonomous driving features are activated, the two front seats recline as the steering wheel retracts. The ‘zero-gravity’ seating position helps to reduce fatigue on long journeys.
