According to reports, Apple is set to buy Drive.ai, a self-driving startup headquartered in Mountain View, California that uses artificial intelligence to make self-driving systems for cars.
Drive.ai has been looking for a buyer for some time now and had been asking larger rivals to acquire them. Now, they are on the fringe of being bought by the largest of them all.
The startup is currently piloting its autonomous vehicles in Texas, following its partnership with the City of Arlington, offering one of the nation’s first self-driving on-demand services open to the general public. It is only the second company to remove the safety driver from its autonomous vehicles.
So far, neither company has confirmed the rumour, so it is unclear what this means for the company’s 100 engineers if the acquisition goes ahead. Already this year, Apple laid off nearly 200 self-driving specialists.
