Volkswagen has hired Alexander Hitzinger, an Apple Director responsible for development of the software company’s first vehicle, to help the German automaker work on self-driving vehicles and Mobility as a Service (MaaS).

Before working on Apple’s secret vehicle project, Hitzinger worked within the VW Group’s Porsche brand and had a stint as an F1 engineer at Red Bull Technology. The appointment of the 47-year-old German illustrates VW’s goal of developing smarter, cleaner and safer vehicles of the future.

Although Hitzinger has had a career within the automotive world, OEMs have been targeting technology specialists for the last year or so, in order to attain the new information and expertise needed to succeed in the new market.
